Designing a Modular Landing Page System for Trial Conversion

Trial pages were being built one-off per campaign, which slowed iteration, drove inconsistent messaging, and made conversion learning difficult to compare across waves.

Context

For a B2B technology company running multiple paid traffic streams into a free trial, the landing page layer was a bottleneck. Custom pages per campaign meant slow testing, inconsistent narrative, and limited rollup of what was actually working.

My role

Created the structure for a modular page system. Wrote the brief, defined the components, and sequenced the testing plan.

Constraints

  • ·Limited web development capacity.
  • ·Multiple message variants across audiences and traffic sources.
  • ·Existing pages used inconsistent patterns and analytics tagging.

Approach

  • 01Audited existing pages for shared structure and surface-level differences.
  • 02Defined a small set of reusable sections that could be combined per campaign without rebuilding the page.
  • 03Wrote a creative brief that constrained variation to the elements actually worth testing.
  • 04Sequenced testing from message and offer down to layout so parallel tests would not contaminate each other.

System built

  • ·Modular component spec for page sections.
  • ·Testing roadmap with stated hypotheses and ordering.
  • ·Tagging and measurement standard so results were comparable across waves.
  • ·Brief template for new page requests so future work stayed inside the system.

Result

Pages became faster to ship, comparable to each other, and easier to learn from. Conversion improvements were directionally positive. The bigger gain was that the team could explain why a page performed the way it did.

What made it hard

Resisting the pull to add more variation than the team could actually measure. The discipline was as much about what not to test as what to test.

What I would do next

Layer in message-level personalization once the base patterns are stable, and connect page-level data to product activation signals rather than treating trial start as the end state.
